Andrew completed his B.Sc in Chemistry at Concordia University in Montreal, QC. Following his undergrad, he pursued graduate studies at Princeton University under the supervision of Greg Scholes studying photosynthetic light harvesting using ultrafast optical spectroscopy and theory. He then transferred to UofT to join the Sargent group. He is currently interested in the synthesis and photophysics of CQDs and their applications in light harvesting.


Aoni Xu

Aoni Xu is a Ph.D. student in University of Science and Technology Beijing under the supervision of Prof. Chaofang Dong. Her research is focused on exploring the relationship between material properties and performance by combining DFT calculations and electrochemistry. From 2017-2018, she worked on DFT study of passivity breakdown for carbon steel in Prof. Macdonald’s group as a visiting student researcher in UC Berkeley. She became a visiting graduate student interested in theoretical study of electrocatalysis in Sargent group from January 2019.


Aravind Ramaraju

Armin Sedighian Rasouli

Chun Zhou

Chun Zhou is a Ph. D. student in Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences under the supervision of professor Long Zhang. Her research is focused on perovskite quantum dots lasers and superfluorescence. She joined professor Sargent’s group as a visiting student to working on quantum dots lasers from February 2019.

Geonhui Lee

Geonhui graduated with bachelor of engineering in mechanical engineering from Sungkyunkwan University and received her master degree in aerospace engineering at Seoul National University. For her master thesis, she had studied two-dimensional nanocarbon material at Synthesis and Applications of Nanocarbon Materials Lab. After graduation, she had been working at Semiconductor Research & Development Centre, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate interested in carbon dioxide conversion catalysts.


Golam Bappi

Golam completed his BASc and MASc in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo. During his master’s degree, he explored the use of waveguides coupled to quantum emitters for deterministic single photon interactions. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate interested in colloidal quantum dot and perovskite-based devices for light emission and solar cells.


Hao Chen

Husna Anwar

Husna studied Physics at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts where she completed her undergraduate thesis on organic photovoltaics. Husna then spent four years working on the design and construction of solar PV, cogeneration and battery storage systems across New York City with a focus on power resiliency for affordable housing developments. She joined the Sargent Group to pursue her interest in solar cell design using quantum dot and perovskite tandem structures.

Jehad Abed

Jehad completed his B.Sc. in Renewable Energy Engineering at the University of Sharjah where he worked on mechanical alloying of metastable and quasicrystal alloys for solar applications. He later obtained his M.Sc. in Materials Science and Engineering from Masdar Institute and Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he mainly worked on plasmonic water-splitting materials. Jehad is currently a Ph.D. candidate and his research focuses on the development of new Oxygen Evolution Reaction (EOR) catalysis to achieve efficient conversion of Carbon Dioxide into useful chemical fuels and feedstocks.


Joao Pina

Joao completed his B.Sc in Micro and Nanotechnology Engineering at the New University of Lisbon in Portugal. He continued with his M.Sc in Nanotechnology at the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden, where he worked with Prof. Mattias Hammar on the device design and fabrication of a 1550-nm light emitting diode and photonic crystal surface emitting laser based on III-V materials. During completion of his master’s degree, he spent a semester studying at McMaster University in Canada. His current focus is on solution-based fabrication and modeling of infrared light emitting devices based on colloidal quantum dots.

Maral received her B.Sc. in Material Science and Engineering from Amirkabri University of Technology (Tehran Polytechnic), Iran.  Following her bachelor studies, she pursued graduate studies in Material Science and Engineering at Sharif University of Technology where she mainly worked on dye sensitized solar cells at Nanotechnology Laboratory. She joined Sargent Group in 2018 as a Ph.D. candidate. Her current research is focused on colloidal quantum dot photovoltaics.


Margherita Biondi

Margherita received her Bachelor Degree in Materials Science and her Master Degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Università degli Studi di Genova, Italy. For her master thesis project she worked at Utrecht University, studying the synthesis and optical properties of quantum dots, supraparticles and nanoplatelets. She is currently a PhD candidate interested in colloidal quantum dots and photovoltaics.


Mingyang Wei

Petar completed his Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) in Nanotechnology Engineering from the University of Waterloo. During his undergraduate studies, he spent 7 months at MIT as a student researcher under the supervision of Professor Vladimir Bulovic where he investigated novel nano-electromechanical systems for low power applications. He is currently a Ph. D. candidate researching the photophysics and exciton transport mechanisms of novel quantum dot and perovskite materials for applications of next-generation light emitting devices and photovoltaics.


Sam Teale

Sam completed bachelors and masters degrees in Mathematics and Physics at The University of Manchester in the UK, where he worked under the supervision of Lucio Picarillo studying fluid dynamics in refrigerators for use in cosmological measurements. From 2017-2019 he worked to develop semiconductor based neutron detectors for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate interested in perovskite-based devices for use in solar cells.


Shaihroz Khan

Shaihroz graduated with a Bachelor of Technology (Honors) in Petrochemical Engineering at the Aligarh Muslim University, India where he studied the techno-economic feasibility of methanol production from syn-gas. He later obtained a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from The Petroleum Institute, Abu Dhabi where he worked on CMS membranes for natural gas separation. Prior to beginning his Ph.D., he worked for a short while at the research center of ADNOC in partnership with Total, Shell and BP in the field of heterogeneous catalysis for refinery hydrocracking operations. Currently, as a Ph.D. candidate, his research focuses on the techno-economic assessment and catalyst development for converting carbon dioxide (CO2) into useful fuels and petrochemical feedstocks.


Ya-Kun Wang

Ya-Kun Wang received his master’s degree from Soochow University, Suzhou, China. He is currently a joint Ph.D. candidate. He did organic synthesis for organic light-emitting diodes in Soochow University for four years under the supervision of Prof. Liang-Sheng Liao. He joins Ted’s group in Sep. 2018. In Ted’s group, he will focus on optoelectronic applications in perovskite materials.


Yu Yan

Yu received his B.S. degree in Applied Physics and Material Chemistry at the University of Science and Technology of China. For undergraduate research projects, he focused on designing OER electrocatalysts under Prof. Jie Zeng’s supervision and light-emission materials under Prof. Fengjia Fan’s supervision. He started the graduate study in 2019 and currently a Ph.D. candidate interested in carbon upgrading towards profitable chemicals via electrocatalytic hydrogenation.


Yuan (Jason) Liu

Yuan graduated from Tsinghua University with a B. E. degree in Materials Science and Engineering and a B. S. degree in Psychology in 2019. Yuan worked as an undergraduate research assistant in Prof. Hongwei Zhu’s lab at Tsinghua, majorly working on bandgap-tunable double perovskites PVs and TMDs for photoelectrochemical. Yuan also served as the president of the 11th Spark Program of Tsinghua University, as well as, afterhours drama player and director. Yuan is currently interested in LEDs and lead-free perovskites. Yuxin (Jessie) Chang

Yuxin received her B.Sc in Materials&Nanosciences from University of Waterloo. During her undergraduate studies, she did her thesis project at Prof. Michael Tam’s group, exploring modified cellulose nanocrystals for wastewater treatment application. She also worked with Prof. Marcel Nooijen as a research assistant to implement and evaluate coulomb interactions in molecular mechanics calculations. She joined Sargent Group in Sept 2019 to pursue research on machine learning and its application in catalyst design.


Ziliang Li
